Insufficient progress and performances will be identified so that any Probationary Firefighter who may require additional training or instruction may receive that. It is the responsibility of the Captain to provide training for the Probationary Firefighter. It is the Probationary Firefighter’s responsibility to practice and know these evolutions so they become second nature. PROCEDURE: The task book has been divided into a truck and engine section. The task book may be started as soon as the Probationary Firefighter starts his/her shift assignment. If finished early, proceed into the next quarter’s items. For the Firefighter, it is important that you stay on pace, and you should expect to take the initiative to let your Captain know where you are at and what you need to work on. Meanwhile the Captain must be diligent in allocating time for accomplishment. The Probationary Firefighter is to be rated on a simple pass-fail basis for each check-off. Either he/she knows or performs or not, as compared to what is deemed standard via the SLOFD Training Manual. A rookie may pass, but need further work in an area. Meanwhile the Probationary Firefighter (or their Captain) should never assume that just because they have completed a check-off, that the Firefighter is proficient in that evolution. The Firefighter should practice these evolutions so that in the event of an emergency, or a test, he/she is comfortable and efficient with their performance. TESTING: During a rotation assigned to an Engine, the Probationary Firefighter shall complete the skills listed in the “Engine” section of the Probationary Firefighter task book. During a rotation assigned to a Truck, The Probationary Firefighter shall complete the skills listed in the “Truck” portion of the Probationary Firefighter task book. Tests will be reflective of the skills the Probationary Firefighter is performing for the type of apparatus they are assigned to. Each manipulative exam will be the same test that was administered during the Probationary Firefighter’s academy. End of rotation and Final exams will be scheduled in advance by an Academy Coordinator. Probationary Firefighters will be notified of their test date and time, and have sufficient time to prepare for an exam. Academy Coordinators will make every effort to have testing conditions and evaluators be consistent for all Probationary Firefighters participating in the testing process. San Luis Obispo City Fire Department Probationary Firefighter Task Book INTRODUCTION TO THE POSITION TASK BOOK: During the probationary period, the Probationary Firefighter and his/her Captain are expected to focus on the skills, tasks, knowledge, and expertise that all SLOFD firefighters must exemplify. This begins with the rookie academy, and continues with on-shift time. It is the most important period of a Firefighter’s career, and requires persistence and considerable effort to accomplish properly. Captains (and BC’s) should be aware of this priority, and allocate time accordingly. The Captain should sit down with the Probationary Firefighter and take a look at the signoffs and tests that are required, so that he/she has a good handle on what will need to be accomplished ROOKIE ADVISOR: Each Probationary Firefighter will be assigned a rookie advisor when they start their shift work. Rookie advisors are peers (other firefighters or engineers). Rookie advisors are there to provide information, expertise, counseling, guidance, etc., regarding probationary processes, union/association, personalities, etc. The intent of this position is not to replace a captain’s responsibilities and roles, but to provide a more comfortable atmosphere in some situations should it be necessary to the rookie. Typically, a Probationary Firefighter will have the same rookie advisor throughout, which provides better consistency since the rookie will work with more than one captain during the probationary period. MINI DRILLS Mini drills are a very important part of probation. They are specified in the task book with the designated “MD”. The probationary firefighter should look at mini drills as a way of showing his/her crew what he/she has learned and knows while going through probation. Mini drills should not be looked at as just something that needs to be done to get through probation. As a probationary firefighter, you need to know and remember the information discussed or demonstrated in each and every mini drill. You should not just memorize the information for the time you teach the mini drill and forget it once it has been signed off. Remember this: the subjects you will cover while doing mini drills are vital parts of your job. Know your job! Some of the signoffs require simple manipulative performance, quiz, or testing, but the mini-drill format with evaluation sheet will be utilized for any signoffs noted with “MD” beside the topic. The best way to learn a topic is to teach it. Involve your crew in the mini drill and make it interesting for them. Use the following common lesson plan format of preparation, motivation, presentation, and application. Preparation, this involves gathering as much information on the subject as possible. Try to find written information on the subject. (E.g. Training Manual) keep in mind that this type of information may not be available. You may also need to get this information by talking with others (E.g. Gus Vargas) or looking the information up in books. Motivation, this is the beginning of your class. Get the attention of your crew. Involve them and explain how and why they should know or in most cases remember this (usually this revolves around safety).
