SUBJECT: Appointment of City Council members to work with staff on transit service
and funding issues
CAO RECOMMENDATION
The Mayor and City Council designate two Council members to work with
staff on the various service and funding alternatives available to the City
as a result of the coming shortfalls in Federal funding and a potential
reduced contribution from Cal Poly
DISCUSSION
As I mentioned at the August 20th City Council meeting, there is a rapidly approaching "funding
crisis" for the City-run transit operation in San Luis Obispo, due primarily to a quite considerable
cutback in Federal funding for the next fiscal year and due to the proposed reduction in contract
amount from Cal Poly. For the first time in many years, we will soon have to weigh possible
service reductions versus the need to increase our revenue, which almost certainly would include
an increase in rates for both regular users of the system and Cal Poly students and staff.
Since these issues are serious and of long-term consequence to the City and directly related to
our delivery of transit service, I suggest a closer City Council involvement as we work through
the various alternative approaches.
In speaking to Mayor Settle on this matter, he has suggested the names of Vice-Mayor Dodie
Williams and Council member Bill Roalman, who also serves as the City's representative to
SLORTA (regional transit).
