CITY OF SAN LU IS OBISPO FROM Bonnie L Gawf,4 Cierk SUBJECT: Resolution suppoiting The Business Improvement Association's application forthe Great American Main Street Award CAO RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a resolution recognizing the partnership between the City and Business Improvement Association.and supporting the nomination of the "Marsh Street Makeover" for a Great American Main Street Award. DISCUSSION The Edward D. Jones financial services firm and the National Trust for ITistonc Preservation's Main Street Center are cosponsoring the Great American Main Street Award to recognize the revitalization effort in downtowns across the country. The BIA intends to submit an application to compete in this award program. As such, the City Council must adopt a resolution recognizing our partnership with the Downtown and supporting the application. Judging criteria includes evidence of public/private partnership; broad based community support; tangible achievements; balanced activities in physical improvements, business development, marketing and organizational development; preservation of historic properties; and innovative approaches to revitalization. The presentation of the 1997 Great American Main Street Awards will be made during a special ceremony at the opening session of the National Town Meeting on Main Street in Portland, Oregon on Monday, April 28, 1997. CONCURRENCES The downtown Business Improvement Association Board of Directors supports the entry on behalf of the Association. FISCAL IMPACT A $50 entry fee is required, which will be provided by the BIA. Attachments Resolution C'-�1 RESOLUTION NQ (1996 Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CYTY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO TO SUPPORT TILE NOMINATION OF THE MARSH STREET MAKEOVER FOR A CREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARD BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of San Luis Obispo that the economic health and cultural vibrancy of downtown San Luis Obispo is crucial to the overall well-being of the City of San Luis Obispo; AND BE IT RESOLVED that the City of San Luis Obispo wholeheartedly supports and, through its endorsement of Fanners' Market, the sidewalk cleaning prograrn, development of a Downtown Physical Concept plan, transportation services, and commitment to maintaining regional government in the downtown area, financially and administratively participates in efforts to maintain the vitality of downtown San Luis Obispo AND BE IT RESOLVED that the City of San Luis Obispo fully supports this entry into the Creat American Main Street Awards competition.
