DISCUSSION
Background
The City Council recently adopted a policy for the naming of City parks. This policy authorizes the
Parks and Recreation Commission to make appropriate recommendations to the City Council for
the naming of parks. The proposed naming of the Vista del Collados park site comes to the
Council with the enthusiastic support of the Commission.
In 1994, the Parks and Recreation Department staff and the Parks and Recreation Commission
began taking public input for the purpose of updating the Parks and Recreation Element. At the
first meeting, held in May, two fifth-grade students from Teach School, Vincent Priolo and Drew
Martin, called attention to the need for a park in their neighborhood located around Vista del
Collados Drive. They brought with them a petition signed by over 50 neighborhood residents in
support of the park The boys also made a presentation of a possible park design. Vincent and
Drew subsequently attended every public hearing and study session concerning the Element until it
was approved by the Commission in November of 1994. As a result of their efforts, a park site for
that neighborhood was in the final version of the Element update approved by the City Council in
May of 1995. Funding for the project was included in the 1995-97 City budget. The park itself
was completed earlier this year.
CONCURRENCES
Members of the Parks and Recreation Commission feel strongly that the efforts of Vincent and
Drew are worthy of recognition, and the appropriate recognition is the naming of the park site in
their honor.
FISCAL EM PACT
The recognition for a park naming is an appropriate park sign. Funding for a PRIOLO-MARTIN
PARK sign is available through the projects fund balance.
