HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/16/1997, C-4 - GRANT APPLICATION TO ROBERT JANSSEN FOUNDATION council ep ember 16 , 1997 j agenda uepont a-.41 CITY OF SAN LUIS O B I S P O FROM: OPaul LeSage,Parks and Recreation Director Prepared by: Kathy ecreation Manager SUBJECT: Grant Application to Robert Janssen Foundation CAO RECOMMENDATION: Authorize staff to prepare and submit a grant application to the Bob Janssen Foundation for the purchase and installation of an electronic scoreboard at Sinsheimer Stadium.. DISCUSSION: Background Sinsheimer Baseball Stadium in Sinsheimer Park was the site of 280 baseball games from January 1997 through August 1997. Thousands of spectators venture to the park annually to watch Division I-A college baseball, high school, local Babe Ruth, semi-pro and amateur adult baseball. Sinsheimer Stadium is also the home for Regional and State Babe Ruth and High School tournaments. The baseball stadium is in need of a new scoreboard. While still working, the dependability of the current board is questionable. Often times throughout the season user groups that have reserved the facility turn on the switch to start the board and nothing happens. That result s in a hasty shuffle to contact service companies to convect the failure. Repair staff have indicated that the life expectancy of the aged scoreboard is limited. A new scoreboard including installation would cost$31,881.00. While Sinsheimer Stadium is the focal point of a moderate renovation during the next two years, the scoreboard is not included in that capital improvement project. A copy of the bid proposal is attached. There is a local foundation making funding available for projects to improve the community. A former Parks and Recreation Commissioner and community service minded individual,Robert Janssen, passed away in 1997. As a result of his passing a foundation was established called the Robert Janssen Foundation. There is an annual available amount of foundation funding made available FISCAL IMPACT The request for funding includes all associated costs with purchase and installation of the scoreboard. There wouldn't be any additional associated fiscal impact. CONCURRENCES The Parks and Recreation Commission supported the staff recommendation at their September 3 meeting as well as the Joint Use Committee at their August 26 meeting. ATTACHMENTS 1.
