CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO (+
FROM: Michael D. McCluskey, Director of Public Works"" "
Prepared by: Terry Sanville, Principal TransportationPlanner4:-
SUBJECT: Naming the "City-to-Sea Bike Trail"
CAO RECOMMENDATION: By motion, support the naming of the trail to be the "Bob
Jones City- to- SeaBike Trail."
DISCUSSION
The County Department of General Services has asked the City to support the naming of the bike
trail as noted above. The attached letter from the County and background on Mr. Jones spells out
the basis for this particular request and recommended naming.
While Mr. Jones was not a noted bicyclist, as an environmentalisthe was a strong advocate for, and
participant in the preservation and enhancement of the San Luis Obispo Creek and the creation of a
trail leading from San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach. The long -term vision for the trail is to improve
recreational bicycling between San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach through the creation of on- and
off -street bikeways.
CONCURRANCES
The City's Bicycle Committee reviewed the County's proposal at its June 18" meeting and
supported the recommended naming of the trail.

CITY TO THE SEA TRAIL
The County Parks and Recreation Commission has received a recommendation to rename County Parks'
Avila Bike Trail in honor of Bob Jones (see attached) and I would now like to obtain official comment from
the City of San Luis Obispo on this proposal. While the Commission has endorsed the idea as a suitable
tribute to recognize Bob's environmental contributions, the naming of regional park facilities is ultimately
a decision of the Board of Supervisors. Prior to taking this item to the Board, I am seeking additional support
from the other communities tied to this trail.
Earlier this year, the Avila Valley Advisory Committee unanimously endorsed the renaming of the trail as
the Bob Jones City to the Sea Bike Trail. Their consensus was that it honored an important contributor to our
local environment and was also more evocative of the regional scope of the trail. The "City" embodied in that
recommendation is, of course, San Luis Obispo. Therefore, County Parks staff would appreciate a review of
the proposal along with a recommendation which will be forwarded to the Board for their consideration.
This route, the highest ranked priority in the County Trails Plan, is intended to run south from San Luis
Obispo to Avila Beach. Approximately one mile of "Class Three" trail is already open to the public along San
Luis Creek between Ontario Road and San Luis Bay Drive. County Parks is looking forward to working
cooperatively with the City and the San Luis Obispo Land Conservancy to link that portion with routes
leaving the city on Higuera to provide a first class recreational opportunity and alternate transportation route
to the sea
Should this item be scheduled before either the City Council or City Parks and Recreation Commission for
comment, I would be happy to attend and explain our intentions. It would also be appropriate to include a
representative from the Land Conservancy which initiated this request. For further information, I can be
contacted at 781 -5930. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
