SUBJECT: Resolution supporting the Downtown Association's
application for the 1999 Great American Main St. Award
CAO RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a resolution recognizing the partnership between the City and the Downtown Association and
supporting the nomination of the Downtown Association for its part in the comprehensive revitalization
program of the Downtown for the Great American Main St. Award.
DISCUSSION:
For the third year in a row,the Downtown Association seeks recognition for efforts to revitalize and
maintain Downtown SLO in an exemplary fashion by applying for the Great American Main St. Award.
An important and necessary component of the application is evidence from the City of San Luis Obispo in
the form of a resolution indicating support of this objective.
Judging criteria includes evidence of public/private partnership;broad based community support; tangible
achievements;balanced activities in physical improvements;business development, marketing and
organizational development;preservation of historic properties; and innovative approaches to revitalization.
The presentation of the 1999 Great American Main St. Awards will be made during a special ceremony at
the opening session of the National Town Meeting on Main St. in San Diego,CA during March, 1999.
CONCURRENCES
The Downtown Association Board of Directors, along with community supporters, wholeheartedly
endorses this nomination.
FISCAL IMPACT
A $50 entry fee is required, paid for by the Downtown Association. Winners of the award receive $5,000
which would augment DA programs such as SLO Sweep `n Greet and special promotions.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LUIS
OBISPO TO SUPPORT THE NOMINATION OF THE REVITALIZATION
EFFORTS OF DOWNTOWN SAN LUIS OBISPO FOR A GREAT
AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARD
BE IT RESOLVED,by the City Council of the City of San Luis Obispo that the economic
health and cultural vibrancy of downtown San Luis Obispo is crucial to the overall well-
being of the City of San Luis Obispo;
AND BE IT RESOLVED that the City of San Luis Obispo wholeheartedly supports and,
through its endorsement of Farmers' Market,the sidewalk cleaning program,development
of a Downtown Physical Concept plan,transportation services, and commitment to
maintaining regional government in the downtown area,financially and administratively
participates in efforts to maintain the vitality of downtown San Luis Obispo
AND BE rT RESOLVED that the City of San Luis Obispo fully supports this entry into the
Great American Main Street Awards competition.
