DISCUSSION The Performing Arts Center (PAC) Art Advisory Committee was established to review proposed policy pertaining to visual art exhibitions and other art-related programs and activities in the PAC, and to evaluate proposed art acquisitions for the purpose of permanent display on the grounds or within the PAC itself. The City, the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center (FPAC) and Cal Poly are all responsible for making appointments to the Committee, with the City and FPAC both having two representatives and Cal Poly six representatives. On June 1, 1999, the City Council appointed.Dick DeLong to complete a term on the Committee. That term expired on June 30, 2000. Mr. DeLong has indicated his willingness to serve an additional term until June 30,2003, and we are recommending that this reappointment be made. DE LONG Dick completed a 30-plus year careerin in city management, most recently as City Manager in San Mateo. He retired from the City Management profession in 1990 and moved to San Luis Obispo with his wife Eddie in 1992. He has attended art classes at both Cuesta and Cal Poly and travels extensively. He now uses his love for art and photography regularly in his new career, drawing and painting Prior to coming here he served as Vice Chairman of the San Mateo County Arts Commission. Since coming to San Luis Obispo, he served two terms as President of the San Luis Obispo County Arts Council and as Chairman of the Art Council's Art in Public Places Committee. In 1998, he was commissioned to paint a mural for the League of California Cities commemorating their 100th Anniversary. The mural was presented at the League's annual conference in Long Beach last October and attendees were resented with copies as posters. Earlier this year, he Chaired the one day conference on Public Art funded by the City of San Luis Obispo and co-sponsored by the County Arts Council. He is a strong advocate for art in public places and believes deeply in public art's ability to further enhance and improve the quality of Iffe in the cities of the Central Coast. Al-3
