Subject: Please support the Pismo Preserve!
Dear SLO City Council Members,
I'm writing to you as a citizen, local business owner, and resident of San Luis Obispo.
I'm also writing to you as a bird watcher, hiker, trail runner and supporter of land
conservation.
I would like to express my passionate support for the Land Conservancy of San Luis
Obispo County's proposed purchase of a 900 -acre private ranch above Pismo Beach to
1
create the Pismo Preserve. The City of SLO has a once -in -a-lifetime opportunity with
vote.
One of the best parts of living in SLO County is our enviable greenbelt, but we need
more access to trails and open space. Most of our greenbelt is agricultural land that is
off - limits to the public and there is a very strong desire for access to these special
places. The Pismo Preserve as envisioned will provide this opportunity for locals AND
visitors to connect with nature, while preserving the view shed, the oaks, the rolling
hills, and habitat of this special ranch. The vast majority of residents in SLO can only
drive by this type of scenic private property, but you have the chance to help transform
this ranch into public open space for hiking, biking and walking, under the stewardship
of the competent and well- respected Land Conservancy.
I understand that SLO City staff has recommended a $10,000 donation for this project,
which is only 0.083% of the $12MM budget. Is this the best SLO can do? LCSLO has
requested more help, and we should figure out how to give it to them. If the City of
Pismo can give almost a million dollars, the City of AG can give $40,000 and even the
City of Grover Beach can donate $5,000, the City of SLO should do more than 0.083 %.
Push yourselves to find a way to fund the full $100,000. It will be the best money you've
spent all year.
Thank you in advance for generously funding the proposed Pismo Preserve. The City of
SLO will be better for it.
Sincerely,
Carrie Miller
