Pismo Preserve
City Council – August 19, 2014
Background:
City Council received a
formal letter request for
funding in the amount of
$100,000 to support The
Land Conservancy of San
Luis Obispo County’s
proposed acquisition of
property known as the Pismo
Preserve for conservation,
open space, and passive
recreation purposes.
On July 15, City Council
received testimony and
directed staff to place an
item on its August 19 agenda
for further Council
consideration.
Pismo Preserve
City Council – August 19, 2014
Discussion:
The Pismo Preserve is located approximately 2 miles south of the most southerly
extent of the City’s Greenbelt Boundary. The City has no history of funding voluntary
conservation projects outside of the adopted Greenbelt Boundary. However, there
are several policy references in the Conservation and Open Space Element (COSE)
that lend support for the City’s participation in this particular project.
Findings:
Project acquisition funding is consistent with General Plan COSE policies and
programs:
1.COSE Policy 7.3.3(C) – Wildlife Habitat and Corridors
2.COSE Policy 8.5.5 – Passive Recreation
3.COSE Program 8.7.1 (J) & (L) - Protect Open Space Resources
Recommendation:
Authorize a grant of $10,000 of Measure Y funding available in the Open Space
Acquisition CIP account towards the acquisition of real property known as the Pismo
Preserve and adopt a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute a Grant
Agreement with The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County.
