Jennifer! This is SO FREAKING EXCITING!! Thanks so much for letting me know, I'm over the
moon. Peggy's been a phenomenal resource and I'm so appreciative for a city staff that listens and responds to
citizens so effectively. Thank you so much!

Hello Ken,
Thank you for the inquiry on the status of this project. Peggy Mandeville forwarded me your concern regarding
this location in July. Since that time transportation staff has conducted a field review at the location and
determined that the best solution would be to remove the on- street parking. Removing the parking on Grand
Ave. under Highway 101 will also allow us to buffer the bike lane on the left side next to the travel lane. These
striping changes have been approved and we are currently awaiting bids from contractors to complete the
work. Depending on scheduling, holidays or rain days (if rain exists any more), I would expect this striping work
to be done within the next month or so.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the plan or when to expect the construction. Thank
you,

This seems like a very reasonable proposal (to remove curb parking for the Highway 101 undercrossing on
Grand Avenue, in order to improve bicycle safety). Is this a project that we would need to refer to the
Neighborhood Civility Working Group, and /or to the Alta Vista and Monterey Heights Neighborhood
Associations ?.
In any event, please include the Council on any response to Mr. Kienow. Thanks!

Madam Mayor and Council Members,
Thank you for making traffic safety a priority by addressing it at tomorrow's council meeting through the
Traffic Safety Report. Regrettably, I'm not able to attend but wanted to bring to your attention an area that I
believe to be very hazardous for cyclists in hopes that it can be improved. It is not mentioned in the Traffic
Safety Report.
I ride the 101 under crossing at Grand Avenue 3 -6 times per week with my daughter, and the part between Abbott St. and
Loomis St. is very dangerous northbound. I've attached a photo - there are always cars parked in the bike lane there, and
if one of them opened its door the edge of the door would be almost directly above the white line. There's low visibility
under the freeway, there's lots of car traffic (much of it just got off the freeway), and there's lots of bike traffic (students
getting to Poly).
Now that Cal Poly is back in session, those parking spaces are always full. Riding through there is pretty troubling -
you've either got to risk being "doored" by someone getting out of their car or hit by someone in the travel
lane. Southbound is bad too, but since it's downhill it tends to not last as long.
It's a relatively short stretch that would be hugely improved by removing curbside parking. If parking was removed, I'd
estimate roughly 10 -15 spaces would be taken out. If no cars were there, there would be a great bike lane under the
freeway. It's a stretch that's very heavily used by students and parents taking children to the preschools near /at Cal Poly,
and while I'm not sure why parking is allowed in that bike lane in the first place, its safety would be greatly improved if
parking was removed.
Thanks for your time, and sorry I'm not able to attend tomorrow's meeting and voice my concerns there.
