October 21st, 2014
Dear Mayor Marx and City Council members,
I am writing in reference to two agenda items for tonight's council meeting.
C3 Calle Joaquin Force Main Replacement: Please ensure that the Utilities
Department is aware that the City's Calle Joaquin Agricultural Reserve is under active
agricultural production and that any easements for work done on the force main
replacement should not overlap with arable land at that site. Please ensure that the
identification of this easement is done in collaboration with the Natural Resources
Department in order to minimize any impacts of this project on the long -term
agricultural productivity of this site.
PH2 Final Action on the LUCE Update: I am aware of the ongoing discussion
surrounding the Land Use Element Chapter 8, San Luis Ranch Specific Plan Area. I
urge you, over and over again, to adopt policy that guarantees the MAXIMUM
protection for the profoundly valuable agricultural lands found at this site. For nearly
three years I have been working extensively on the management of the arable portions
of the neighboring Calle Joaquin Agricultural Reserve and it is evident that this land
is an invaluable natural and cultural resource for our community. I'll let the following
pictures speak for themselves.
Sincerely,
Jenna Smith
Executive Director
