We applaud your staff for developing a creative interim solution to extending the Railroad Safety Trail from its terminus at Taft Street to Phillips Lane and ask you to support it. We're pleased that Caltrans approved using the $153,000 balance of Bicycle Transportation Account grant funding originally intended for a new bridge from the railroad tracks from a point behind the California Highway Patrol's California Boulevard headquarters to the intersection of Pepper Street and Phillips Lane for this project. The Bicycle Coalition will continue working with the City Bicycle Advisory Committee and city staff on a permanent solution. We appreciate the city's long and challenging negotiations with Union Pacific Railroad and are hopeful that an agreement for a bridge will be reached. A safe and convenient route that connects the Cal Poly campus to downtown San Luis Obispo is crucial in encouraging more people to bicycle. Sincerely, Lea Brooks, Chair SLO County Bicycle Coalition Advocacy Team
