Mayor Marx,
I've been watching the issue of overriding the airport land use and I am very concerned. First let me say that I have been
flying (privately) since 1971 and I spend a lot of time at the airport and, unfortunately, I have seen more than a few aircraft
power failures on take -off. All involved fatalities, either on the ground or the flight crew and passengers. Just this morning
at Midway International Airport, Chicago an Aero Commander 500 (we have a few Aero Commanders here at San Luis)
crashed on take -off. The quote from the AP was "The airport is closely bounded by densely populated neighborhoods ".
Densely populated means that there is no clear space for an attempted landing.
Aircraft engines are very reliable, however those who do not fly or maintain aircraft do not understand the requirements
placed on the engines powering aircraft. I think that it is safe to say that the take -off is the most critical event of every
flight. The reason for this being the most critical time is that once the aircraft is cleared for take off the engine throttled up
from idle to 100% power and kept there for a substantial amount of time. If we were talking about a car sitting at a
stoplight that would be like pressing the gas peddle to floor and keeping it there for five minutes. Under those conditions I
don't believe that your car would last very long.
With all this being said, I have to ask one important question, are the interests of a land developer more important than
human life? This is not a matter of if an aircraft is going to have an emergency but rather when an emergency will be
experienced and a vote that will allow for denser housing around the airport will increase the possibility of a serious
disaster. Again I have to ask, are you comfortable knowing that your vote will put people in harms way?
Regards,
William Kelley
