Subject: Correspondence on the Laguna Lake Golf Course Community Gardens - Clarification
Mr. Bertolette —
I just wanted to provide you with a little clarification to make sure that you were aware of the two different
"projects" that are currently in "review" at the City of San Luis Obispo regarding Laguna Lake Golf Course. If I
am correct, in my assumption, I believe your correspondence below, that my staff just forwarded to me, is in
regard to the second project.
1. Operational Review RFP — December 2, 2014
The first is the Operational Review of the Laguna Lake Golf Course and consideration of issuance of a request
for proposals to operate and /or maintain the course to be considered at the Council's December 2, 2014
meeting at 4:00p.m. The Council Agenda Report for which is located here
http://www.slocity.org/cityclerk/agendas/2014/120214/12-02-
2014%2OBl % 20RFP% 20for% 20Golf %20Course %200perations.pdf.
2. Community Garden Donation Consideration — Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting to Be
Determined
The second project is one that Parks and Recreation Department staff have been working with potential donors
who are interested in donating materials and improvements to facilitate a Community Garden at Laguna Lake
Golf Course. The "project" is not before the Council at this time. Instead, staff and the donors have been
working on some details of the concept, as well as outreaching to neighbors such as yourselves. The next
step for this project is to be considered by the Parks and Recreation Commission and then if they so
recommend brought to Council for consideration of acceptance. There is not an agenda report on this project
at this time as a meeting date has not yet been set. By this email staff has added you to a notification list and
we will certainly reach out to you for all meetings on this topic as well as will include your correspondence to
the PRC and Council.
I hope this email clarifies any confusion you or our Council members may have had on what is being
considered and when.
Best,
Shelly Stanwyck

To those considering the Laguna Lake Golf Course Garden Project,
First, after reviewing the 'updated' project plan, it is abundantly evident that the project planners are not interested in the
garden's neighbors, flying in the face of San Luis Obispo's'Good Neighbor' policy. This plan doesn't address any of the
boundaries with Laguna Green, Laguna Green Mobile Estates, the PG &E transformers, Los Osos Valley Road, possible
easements, property lines or anything outside the scope of the garden itself. This is a major problem, and constitutes a
myopic lack of foresight on the garden's planning regarding the local community.
Secondly, there have been many discussions about the potential downsides of the location of the garden, and there are
many. But most important is the disruption of the gardens neighbor's lives'. Arguments to the effect that gardeners aren't
loud or disruptive have been made by many. But that is not the problem. The primary issue that makes this location
untenable is proximity, plain and simple. It doesn't matter what the activity is, if it's right outside of your window, it's
disruptive, disconcerting, and bothersome. There is not enough room on this lot to provide a proper barrier between the
garden and housing.
Some have pointed out the Meadow Park project as an example of what we might expect from the Laguna garden. The
Meadow Park garden is 28 feet from an eight foot high brick privacy wall protecting that complex. That wall does not exist
at Laguna Green and there certainly is not enough room for any appreciable barrier to our property on the tiny little lot at
Laguna Green Golf Course. The proposed tree barrier is not a sufficient solution and will take many years to mature.
There are those that feel that the opponents of this plan have some lack of appreciation for community gardens. That is
far from the truth, community gardens are a great resource for community beautification, pride and cohesiveness. The
problem with this project that should halt its completion is its location and proximity to primary housing residences. Please
make the right decision and find another location for this project.
Feel free to contact me with questions.
Sincerely and very concerned,
David Bertolette
