I've spoken and written many times about my incredulity over the SLO City Council even considering the idea of overriding the ALUC's safety regulations.... and then there was yesterday's crash of a small jet into a neighborhood in the DC suburbs ... which says more than I can. I was overwhelmed at the backward planning in China -- capitalism riding roughshod over every citizens' health and safety. Back in the clean air of SLO, I am healing slowly. An article in SLO Life this week brought out not only the inadequate LUCE but the first positive solution I've seen for workforce housing: Instead of permitting the building of hundreds of new houses, which can be bought up by speculators or Cal Poly parents to house students, the City should urge, help, force -- whatever it takes -- Cal Poly to house all its students on campus. The creep of student rentals is wrecking neighborhoods and keeping families out of affordable housing. Money spent by the City in cooperation with Poly to help bring this solution about would be well spent putting working families back into these small and medium size homes all across the City. Our middle -aged son lives in one of these neighborhoods near the campus. The college students next door and across the street make sleep impossible on weekend nights and degrade what used to be a family neighborhood with their many vehicles, sometimes parked on their shabby yards, and often obscene language. Police intervention doesn't seem to help; it just gradually gets worse with each new crop of students. I am writing to you as our City leaders to be pro- active on this whole interrelated problem. There are easier, safer, more sure solutions than overriding ALUP regulations and building more unlivable neighborhoods under flight paths. How would you like to live there? trust you will give your vote tonight your heartfelt consideration. Rosemary
