I feel that it is a step too far in the direction of government oversight and reeks of big brother. The Fire Department already does an annual inspection and a second inspection by a different department's employee is unnecessary and a waste of time and money. I have a four -unit rental in San Luis Obispo and keep it in good shape and comply with anything the Fire Department finds in their annual inspection. I realize there are apartment owners that try to cheat the law but to subject all rental units in the entire City to an inspection because of a few bad apples is going too far. In addition, the inspection fee of $98 per unit per year is way out of line. If, as the article in the Tribune states, the inspections are done every three years, then the fee for the inspection of my apartment complex is: 4 (units) x $98 x 3 years = $1176 for each inspection!! That is an absurd amount of money for an inspection that should take a half an hour at the most. Also note that these fees will ultimately get passed along to the tenants. This only makes it more difficult for the tenants to afford to live in San Luis Obispo and flies in the face of your goal of more affordable housing for the citizens of San Luis Obispo. I urge you to see the folly of this program and re- evaluate your methods to find the few bad landlords in the City. Respectfully submitted, Garth Kornreich
