AVNA Position Paper regarding Rental Inspection Program- December 15, 2014
Mayor Marx and fellow Council Members:
AVNA (Alta Vista Neighborhood Association) supports a Rental Inspection Program
for all rental units in R -1 and R -2 zones in the City. What we have now isn't
working! A prime example is 110 Orange St.
Our neighborhood consists of both R -1 and R -2 properties. We would like stronger
enforcement to protect tenants and improve living conditions that could be sub -par
and not up to Code. Many times these conditions cannot be detected from an
outside visual and certainly not from the street or sidewalk.
We need to send a message to investors /landlords that they have a duty to be
responsible property owners. The proposed Rental Inspection Program as outlined
by Joseph Lease has the capability of correcting problems where evident PLUS
rewarding responsible landlords by less frequent inspections. Many other cities use
this type of program with outstanding success.
We (AVNA) encourage you to support Staffs recommendation of a Rental Inspection
Program for SLO!
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Adler - Chairperson of AVNA
