Subject: Proposed Rental Inspection Ordinance
Hello members: The Agenda Item specified above concerns me as a property owner and rental provider.
I realize that especially students live in situations which are unsafe and crowded, and that landlords "gouge"
students by putting too many in a rental, thus driving up home prices. For this reason, I agree with some form of
oversight.
However, a fee attached to these inspections would be onerous (at least for me) for the following reasons: I
provide rental housing with rents below the market price asked in San Luis, i.e. $895.00 /month for a 2- bedroom
apartment with gas, water and trash paid by me. Any fee for inspection (per apartment as stated!) could only
be passed on as increased rent. My rentals provide work -force housing, which you say is in short supply. I have
only one home rented to students and each student has her own bedroom!! (Hardly what I know happens
elsewhere in San Luis.)
I hope and expect that you will think CAREFULLY as you consider such an ordinance, and the unintended
consequences which could happen.
My tenants' financial welfare depends on it.
(I'm sorry I cannot attend tomorrow's meeting, but I am "down" with back pain and unable to get to the
meeting... thanks for understanding.)
Sincerely, Anne M. Brown, P.O. Box 597, Avila Beach, CA 93424 (805- 595 - 7525).
