Subject: Rental inspection ordnance
Dear Mayor and council members,
After our neighborhood's tussle with the ARC and Planning Commission over the Monterey Hotel, we became aware
that other neighborhoods were having somewhat similar struggles with city rules and regulations that affect the culture
and pleasantness of our city. Specifically: the total lack of city awareness of physical and safety deterioration of non -
owner occupied dwellings (often student rentals), and often - associated misbehavior of the renters.
Apparently, business interests are opposing inspection of such dwellings! I can't see why there should be opposition,
since the cost of a business license and inspection fee is so modest compared with the generous prices rentals earn in
SLO. What are they trying to hide ??
If other cities have had successful experiences with such rental inspections, why don't we?
Sincerely,
Norman Brooks Smith and Cheryl Smith
