Box 15755 San Luis Obispo, CA 93406 (805) 543 -8717 www.santalucia.sierraclub.ore We are pleased to see that negotiations for the acquisition of the Miossi Brothers La Cuesta Ranch and the Ahearn Family Ranch have progressed to the point of a staff request for authorization from the Council to secure appraisal services for these 841 acres of potential public open space. These properties will serve the essential purpose of protecting wildlife habitat and providing recreational opportunities as the city grows. By authorizing the expenditure of up to $50,000 toward this end, the Council will in effect be making a down payment on promises made during the campaign to pass Measure G — open space protection being the first item in that measure's ballot description — and upholding the first priority of residents as expressed in the 2012 LUCE Update Survey: Protect the City's peaks, hillsides, creeks and marshes, and acquire and maintain more open space for the greenbelt. Authorizing an RFP for appraisal services and issuing a consultant services agreement toward the acquisition of this land in furtherance of the City's Greenbelt Protection Program will honor the historical and ongoing desire of San Luis Obispo's residents to protect the natural environment. We strongly urge the city to authorize the requested actions in order to move forward with this acquisition opportunity and the creation of the Cuesta Canyon Natural Reserve. Best regards, r L Andrew Christie, Director Santa Lucia Chapter of the Sierra Club P.O. Box 15755 San Luis Obispo, CA 93406
