Attached is my letter regarding Home Stays
Monterey Heights Neighbors
January 5, 2015
Mayor Marx and Council Members,
I have attended a number of presentations regarding the proposed Home Stays. It has always
been stressed that owners of the homes provide a more personal atmosphere; one in which the
guests interact with the owners who act as goodwill ambassadors for the City and County. The
home owner and guests develop a special relationship that cannot be found in a hotel. This is
why we have been told that Home Stays are so important to the community.
If this is truly the case, the ordinance must reflect this special bond and cannot allow a
"Representative" to be present rather than the owner. Furthermore, the 29 day limit is far too
generous. 29 days out of 30 is a vacation rental not a Home Stay. 14 days on and 14 days off
would be much more reasonable.
I have always been in favor of Home Stays as I have enjoyed staying in them from Alaska to the
"zimmer frei" of Vienna. The best part has been the interaction with the owners. On one occasion
only, in Anchorage, Alaska we were left with the owner's "Responsible" son. This was my only
bad experience.
Our neighborhoods must be preserved. The ordinance must require the owner to be present and
limit the number of days to 175 out of the year, not 348. Anything less will further deteriorate
our neighborhoods by introducing mini - Boutique Hotels. Please don't abandon the 31% residents
of SLO and allow our neighborhoods to be further commercialized.
Sincerely,
Linda White,
