Our current element is overdue for an update and, quite frankly, is outdated on many levels. In light of recent news that our City Community Development department will bring upcoming development plans before the PRC to approve park plans that may or may fit into the City's goals for future parks, it is even more imperative that we have a well defined plan for the future of our parks and recreational spaces. Without a plan forward our City could end up with a number of small pocket parks that will not service the community at large. As our city continues to grow and attract businesses, it is important that we keep pace with new places to relax and recreate. There are already unmet needs for lighted tennis courts, diamond fields, and yes, even turf fields. There are also new and growing sports like Pikleball that could use some space. I would urge you and the council to pursue new and updated recreational facilities with the same fervor that our city has pursued open space over the last 3 decades. With the completion of the LUCE update it seems reasonable to continue the process for other Elements in the City plan. Please ask the Council to set aside funds and staff time for a full recreational needs assessment and P &R Element update. Thanks for your time, Jeff Whitener 11 Mariposa Drive, S.L.O. Parks & Rec.
