Dear Mayor Marx and Council Members,
I write to support the letters by Carolyn Smith and Sandra Rowley on behalf of RQN. I write separately to
underscore my individual commitment to RQN's organizational work in the community to highlight the need
for the City's continued focus on Neighborhood Wellness.
I also write separately to register my sentiments as a resident of the Alta Vista Neighborhood and on behalf of
other residents in this neighborhood who share the concern that, without a continued focus on Neighborhood
Wellness as a top goal of the City, we will continue to see an increase in studentification, congested residential
streets, a low supply of affordable workforce housing, and frustration, even despair, on our part that the City
no longer cares about our interests. You must know that perception is growing. One way to stem that
unfortunate tide is to put some enforcement and money muscle behind Neighborhood Wellness.
I wonder how long it will take for the City to lose forever a critical mass of resident community activists who
understand why we are supposedly the "happiest place in America." Remember? It's about long-term
residents having the faith that their City LISTENS and ACTS on behalf of democratically mobilized activists who
want to preserve all the qualities that make us want to live here, permanently. It's about smart land use and
circulation and compatible architectural designs. It's about sensible partnerships with other jurisdictions that
care about the quality of neighborhoods. That's the way it WAS; that's the way it SHOULD BE again! It's NOT all
about increasing the commercial sectors of SLO life.
I have not yet made up my mind whether or not I will be in attendance at the goal -setting event. If I do attend,
it will be to simply observe the process, to see if I can muster any optimism that you all really care us our
interests.
Sincerely,
Sharon G. Whitney
