Subject: SLO Community Goals for 2015 -2017
I submit the following update on the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art's master plan to build a new facility —a
public good that benefits everyone in the San Luis Obispo area, both culturally and economically.
The City's cooperation is vitally important to complete this construction project on the west end of the Mission
Plaza as it relates to the City's "Downtown Concept Plan" and the goals you will set for 2015 -2017.
Thank you for your efforts to revitalize the downtown and provide both economic and cultural benefits to the
residents of the City of San Luis Obispo, as well as the tourists that visit our area.
Sincerely,
Karen Kile
Karen Kile, Executive Director

The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is in the Quiet Phase of a Capital Campaign
to raise 15 million —$12 million to build and furnish it and $3 million for reserves
as a base of financial support.
Dedicated people are working to raise the major lead gifts. Their target goal is $5
million before July 2015. Then the public Capital Campaign will be launched.
The Museum of Art's master plan is to raise the bulk of the funds necessary to
build the project before beginning the Construction Documents Phase, a multi-
year process.
When the Capital Campaign comes close to raising both the requisite
construction funds and a three year reserve for operating the new facility, the
Museum of Art will locate a temporary facility in the downtown area to house
exhibits and arts education during the actual construction phase. Only then will
the existing building be razed and the new building constructed on this site.
The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is a cultural, educational, and regional
resource plus a major tourist destination -where many thousands of residents and
visitors are welcomed each year.
The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art makes a positive impact on the vitality of the
city and county of San Luis Obispo and to the quality of life in this region.
• Free admission for all
• Educational and entertaining exhibitions
• Community partnerships
• Continuing art education for adults
• Youth art classes at the Museum and at satellite locations
• Free docent tours for senior groups, youth organizations, and bus loads
of school children
• Art About Town exhibits featuring local artistis artwork in local
businesses
• Collaborations with other non - profit organizations and businesses
• Nexus for the visual arts in the region and the center of the cultural life in
downtown San Luis Obispo.
Since its very beginning more than fifty years ago this organization, then the Art
Association, then the Art Center, and now named the San Luis Obispo Museum
of Art, has been a place where residents, artists, and visitors alike have come
together to celebrate the visual arts. Today, we have a conceptual design that
has been approved by the City of San Luis Obispo to replace our current facility
on this perfect location, in harmony with the Mission Plaza and surrounding
downtown district.
