Dear Honorable Mayor Marx and City Council Members:
I am writing on behalf of the Board of Directors of The Monday Club and its present membership
of 106 women. It is our desire to make known our concerns about the proposed Monterey hotel
project located at 1845 -1865 Monterey Street.
We appreciate the work that has been clone to date by the development team along with the city
agencies to mitigate the sound, light, and parking issues. That notwithstanding, The Monday Chub
is extremely concerned about and opposed to the proposed four -story height of the hotel.
Furthermore, the Cultural heritage Committee was never given the opportunity to identify any
potential impact this project might have on The Monday Club. We feel that a four -story
building located directly to the North -east of our back garden area will significantly diminish
our view- scape.
The Monday Club of San Luis Obispo was designed by .Julia Morgan (of Hearst Castle fame)
who was named the 2014 AIA Gold Medal honoree. She is the first woman architect licensed
in the State of California and is now the first female recipient of the AIA Gold Medal award.
Our building was designed and built specifically for use as a clubhouse for its members.
Construction was completed and the building occupied in 1934. Our club is a rarity among
the many women's clubs that were formed in the early part of the 20 °i century in that we are
still viable and functioning in our original capacity.
We are the preservation stewards of this architectural and cultural treasure and a take our
jobs very seriously. We are in the final stages of completing our application for submission
to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a unique property and has a very good
chance of achieving this honored status. Having such a large and imposing structure looming

over our building and grounds could diminish our own stature potentially impacting rental
of our building and grounds, and therefore imperil a vital revenue stream.
The Monday Club supports continued growth in San Luis Obispo, however we feel that such
a large structure is not consistent with the adjacent neighborhood cityscape and respectfully
request that the proposed height be scaled back to three stories. We feel that a building of this
proposed stature will set a precedent for future hotels, and potential renovation of the existing
hotels nearby.
Our Board of Directors and many members will attend the upcoming meeting on
February 17, 2015 and request the opportunity to publicly address the City Council at that time.
We look forward to working together to expand our neighborhood and create something with
which the entire community can be proud.
Respectfully yours,
Chris isle
