TO: City Council
FROM: Carrie Mattingly, Utilities Director
VIA: Katie Lichtig, City Manager
SUBJECT: March 3, 2015 Agenda correspon ence Item C -7
COUNCIL MEETING:-3- - 2-o s
ITEM NO.:
A council member inquired whether the alternative treatment process (High Rate A/B) being
bench tested would have any impact on odors and asked if odor could effectively be measured in
the bench test.
Our program manager, Jeffery Szytel, P.E. from WSC provided this response:
Depending upon the configuration of the High Rate AIB process, we could see a reduction in
odor. However, bench scale testing is not very effective for exploring this potential benefit. Our
bench scale test is intended to validate the energy balance assumptions used in the preliminary
analysis by comparing BOD removal performance with the existing primaries. One possible
approach would be to measure sulfide and sulfate entering and exiting each reactor, which could
provide some indication of odor production of the process. It would just increase the analytical
costs slightly.
