A quorum of nine is required to vote on any official business. The positions of chairperson and vice chairperson are elected for two -year terms in January. , k"i V , . - ILL a Tobacco Control Coalition AGENDA CORRESPONDENCE Date.S -75-5 Item #_?HZ-_ s4uft Nawsu.- r_J " YSFI •r MISSION STATEMENT _To work toward achieving tobacco -free communities and to reduce illness and premature deaths attribyted to tobacco use. i 0 Tobacco Control Coalition GOALS • Coordinate, implement and promote community education. • Implement and support policy and legislation that prevents tobacco use. • Protect the health of non - smokers. • Serve as a resource for tobacco users to quit. • Promote tobacco -free lifestyles. • Collaborate with others to implement mission and goals. ROLE The Tobacco Control Coalition provides consultation to the San Luis Obispo County Health Department (Local Lead Agency) in developing and implementing tobacco control programs in the county. The Coalition assists the Local Lead Agency in implementing and coordinat- ing prevention, education, and cessation projects in local communities. A major focus has become the use of media and community involvement to develop and influence policy. Tobacco Control Coalition MEMBERSHIP COMPONENTS The functions of the Tobacco Control Coalition include identifying local populations at risk and in need of services, increasing community awareness about tobacco issues, providing expertise in planning tobacco control projects, advocating for tobacco control policies and keeping tobacco issues in the public arenas. Recruitment for the Coalition is on a continuous basis and strives to have representation from groups and organizations such as the following: education, voluntary health organizations, worksites /employers, media related, community members, law enforcement, health care professionals, government, faith -based and youth. Organizations, designated to have Coalition members, select a representative (and alternate, if they wish) to attend meetings and act collectively with other members in an advisory capacity for the program. Other community representatives are also included in the subcommittees. Some of these committees focus on identified high -risk groups and advise on specific program components. They pollute the air and are harmful to you and your family. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and teens should never use e- cigarettes or be exposed to the aerosol due to the harm nicotine may cause to brain development. Support policies that do not allow e- cigarettes to be used indoors and where children are present. N WHAT ARE E— CIGARETTES? E- cigarettes are devices that use a battery to heat a liquid nicotine solution ( "e- liquid "). The heated e- liquid creates an aerosol that is breathed into the lungs. A&6 M- E- cigarettes go by other names such Ell as e -cigs, e- hookahs, hookah pens, vapes, vape pens or mods. They come in .many shapes and sizes. Some can only be used once, while others can be refilled. Others have a tank which may hold large amounts of e- liquid containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. E- cigarettes are also used to smoke illegal substances like marijuana and hash oil. WHY ARE THEY DANGEROUS? a E- cigarettes contain nicotine and chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects or other health problems. E- cigarettes and e- liquids come in fruit and candy flavors that appeal to children who may taste or drink the e- liquid. E- liquids are poisonous if swallowed, and are harmful if the liquid gets on skin or in the eyes. The e- cigarette batteries are also poisonous if swallowed. `�1 ,,, AREN'T THEY SAFER THAN TOBACCO CIGARETTES? "j E- cigarettes contain harmful chemicals, but not as many as regular cigarettes. E- cigarettes produce an aerosol, not water vapor. The aerosol is a mixture of chemicals and small particles that can hurt the lungs just like cigarette smoke. E- cigarettes are just as addictive as regular cigarettes. People can become addicted to nicotine from using e- cigarettes and then may start using regular cigarettes. DO E—CIGARETTES HELP SMOKERS QUIT? Studies show that e- cigarettes do not help people quit smoking cigarettes. Instead, many people end up using both products. Over - the - counter and prescription medicines are widely available and very effective at helping people quit smoking cigarettes. ARE THEY SAFE TO SMOKE INDOORS? Iftmi No. E- cigarettes pollute the air with tiny particles that get trapped in the lungs. Just like regular cigarettes, the pollution from e- cigarettes may hurt others. J 1 w
