Subject: Roof collapse 364 Hathaway
This incident is par for the course and lends further support to the lack of wisdom shown by Cal Poly in its
choice to put a new freshman dorm on Slack street. I've stated enough reasons in the past why placing this
dorm here is pure nonsense and inviting trouble. Put it well back in the confines of the campus, enough said.
It would be a step in the right direction for all concerned, single family neighborhoods, parents of students and
ultimately the students themselves if Cal Poly adopted the policy that all freshman and sophomore students
would be required to live on campus. This might foster the chance of seeing the university experience as a call
to high education and academics as opposed to the Club Med philosophy which prevails at Cal Poly today. It is
almost a sham to call this school an institution of higher learning. I know that sounds harsh but it is indicative
of the trend. I've lived in SLO most of my life and I'm 67 years old.
Universities all over the country are experiencing an epidemic of things like assaults to women, rapes and an
enormous amount of binge drinking and the consequent disturbances this brings to the communities these
schools are located in. This is true of Cal Poly.
Our choice is to write this off as kids - being -kids or to elevate our expectations for universities to demonstrate
that they are indeed worthy of being called institutions of higher learning.
I call on President Armstrong to lead Cal Poly towards a policy of on- campus housing requirements and away
from the Club Med mentality.
The massive party and roof collapse was just one and a half blocks from my home. I didn't appreciate all the
noise at 4:00am either.
