Why do you want to serve on a City, advisory body? I would like to become involved in municipal politics and decision making. I am very intrigued by the way decisions are made and I would enjoy being responsible for actions that I personally and the advisory body as a whole make. Also it would be interesting to be part of a body whose decisions can make an impact on the city as well as its citizens. I have always found it challenging to take a disagreement or conflict and find a resolution in which both parties are agreeable and feel as if their perspective was voiced. Finally I would like the opportunity to gain understanding about our city, what is the current and near future issues and, if possible, to have the chance to be a part of those issues. 2. Why do you want to be a member of the Board of Appeals and what do you hope to accomplish? I would like to be a member of the Board of Appeals because of the opportunity I would have to learn more about the building issues and its contribution to the city of San Luis Obispo.. I would also like to meet people who have the same goal of betterment of the city and its growth. I have served on several committees in the past and miss its atmosphere and being part of a team that resolves conflict. I would like to accomplish two things in my tenure with the Board of Appeals. First off I would like to learn more about the city and its government structure and to have a role it its decision making. Secondly, I would like to meet new individuals on a professional and civic level and to learn more about the building industry and its impact on the city. 3. Have your ever attended a meeting of the Board of Appeals or another City advisory body? What observations did you make? I have not attended a meeting of the Board of Appeals or any other City advisory body. I have only recently heard about the positions available within civic government and the opportunities for its citizens to get involved. But as I get more and more involved I will no doubt attend more advisory body meetings to gain understanding into other committees and their functions and their influence on the Board of Appeals. 4. What qualities, experience, and expertise make you a good candidate for the Board of Appeals? As alluded to in a previous response, I have served on several committees and am comfortable with their structure. While attending Cal Poly I was a member of numerous standing committees and my senior year'I was the chair of the Facilities and Operations Committee within the Associated Students organization(student government). The committee consisted of 25 members comprised of both faculty and students. This position taught me a great deal about responsibility and the traits needed to make informed decisions. The Facilities and Operations Committee was responsible for the planning and operation of the student owned facilities(University Union, Recreation Center, and Children's Center). We were also instrumental in the design and approval for the Cal Poly Sports Complex that opened last October. A f-iY rte. While serving as the Vice President of Operations I sat on six different committees varying in size from 5-10 members to 3540 members, meeting weekly. This variety of committee size, structure, and focus has given me a wealth of experience that I hope to bring to the Board of Appeals. I also worked at the San Luis County Assessors Office while attending.Cal Poly and gained an insight in to the building industry and its components. It was necessary for me to learn about new and revolutionary products and their impact on the industry. I also learned about build quality and the materials needed build a structure that was up to code and able to stand timeandthe elements S.. In your view, what are some key building issues in SLO? At this time I see two key building issues in SLO:the expansion of the downtown area in to residential areas and the desire for more residential housing within the city limits. In my eight and one half years living here I have seen an expansion of small businesses and professional offices moving to residential:structures. I believe this stems from the lack of office space and the desire for professionals to be in the downtown area.. This has an impact on the housing market due to the number of housing structures being decreased as the houses turn to office space. Secondly I see a growing demand of individuals and families who wish to reside in the city of San Luis Obispo but can not afford to due to the limited housing available. I am not in any way favoring massive expansion and sacrificing the resources that make this town special, but I am interested in increasing the availability of housing for those who care to live in our city. 6. Is there any additional information about yourself you'd like to share? (Please feel free to attach a resume, if you have one). I anxiously await being a part of a decision making body again, and I,believe I would be a good addition to the Board of Appeals. I may not have the deep knowledge about the building industry that other applicants may; but I have the desire and capacity to learn about new concepts. I am open to being taught and enjoy learning.about new ideas and anticipate working with knowledgeable and experienced individuals. Attachment 4 Page 4 of 4 While serving as the Vice President of Operations I sat on six different committees varying in size from 5-10 members to 3540 members, meeting weekly. This variety of committee size, structure, and focus has given me a wealth of experience that I hope to bring to the Board of Appeals. I also worked at the San Luis County Assessors Office while attending Cal Poly and gained an insight in to the building industry and its components. It was necessary for me. to learn about new and revolutionary products and their impact on the industry. I also learned about build quality and the materials needed build a structure that was up to code and able to stand time and the elements S. In your view, what are some key building issues in SLO? At this time I see two key building issues in SLO: the expansion of the downtown area in to residential areas and the desire for more residential housing within the city limits. Why do you want to serve on a City advisory body? I would like to be a member of the Board of Appeals because of the opportunity I would have to learn more about the building issues and its contribution to the city of San Luis Obispo. I would also like to meet people who have the same goal of betterment of the city and its growth. I have served on several committees in the-past and miss its atmosphere and being part of a team that resolves conflict. I have only recently heard about the positions available within civic government and the opportunities for its citizens to get involved.. But as I get more and more involved I will no doubt attend more advisory body meetings to gain understanding into other committees and their functions and their influence on the Board of Appeals. 4. What qualities, experience, and expertise make you a good candidate far the Board of Appeals? As alluded to in a previous response, I have served on several committees and am comfortable with their structure. While attending Cal Poly I was a member of numerous standing committees and my senior year I was the chair of the Facilities and Operations Committee within the Associated Students organization(student government). The committee consisted of 25 members comprised of both faculty and students. This position taught me a great deal about responsibility and the traits needed to make informed decisions. The Facilities and Operations Committee was responsible for the . planning and operation of the student owned facilities(University Union, Recreation Center, and Children's Center). We were also instrumental in the design and approval for the Cal Poly Sports Complex that opened last October.
