Dear Mayor Settle and Council Members,
This April, the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce kicked off the "It's Our
Business to Power Down" energy conservation campaign. Utilizing the design and
marketing skills of our members, we were able to create and promote a message that
identifies participants and flags for customers a commitment to saving energy.
Although we have succeeded in reaching our members, we believe that this program
would also be effective for a wider audience. To accomplish that, we need your help.
We would like the opportunity to collaborate with The City of San Luis Obispo in a
joint effort using an already proven and appealing logo and slogan that could appear in
the city's facilities and promotions.
The logo (enclosed) could be revised to read"Member San Luis Obispo Power Down
Coalition." We have previously had the slogan printed as window decals, posters, or 3
inch wearable buttons. The city's cost to order these items would be $360 per 500 for
decals (4 and 3/8 inch square); $2.50 each for an 8'/2 by 11 inch poster; and$51 per 25
for buttons (3 inch round). Other types of products and sizes would also be available
per your request. Displaying these items is a way of communicating that we're on the
"energy bandwagon" which will then hopefully inspire others to conserve.
This is a local approach that has garnered statewide attention during the Chamber's
recent trip to Sacramento and via the Energy Conservation Declaration of Action,
crafted by a high-level task force comprised of business leaders and energy experts.
As a part of our campaign, we have also produced lists of energy conservation tips
which could be included, for example, in City mailers to both residents and businesses
under the heading of the campaign logo. These are best practices aimed toward

achieving an overall 20% reduction in energy consumption.
We believe that a joint effort between the City and the Chamber, utilizing the branding
campaign that is already underway, would most effectively boost conservation efforts
and bring the concept to wider distribution. Our Director of Governmental Affairs,
Patricia Wilmore, will make a brief presentation of this plan during public comment at
the Council meeting on June 19.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
4-
