Why do you want to serve on a city advisory body? City governance depends upon the involvement of its citizenry. I have lived,in the city for twenty years and through my work with a variety of non-profit agencies I have been given the opportunity to contribute to our very special community. The city commission system allows for a dynamic and engaged dialogue to which I would hope to contribute. Z Why do you want to be a member of the HRC and what do you hope to accomplish? In my assignment at Cal Poly as Director of the Center for Community Volunteerism and Service-Lzaming I have the opportunity to work towards bridging the distance between the university and the community. More specifically the work of the Center is designed to create educational opportunities for the Cal Poly community to work `hands-on"in the city and to work towards common ground. The efforts that the Center has made in partnership with the EOC Homeless Shelter,Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo County, and Mental Health-Transitions serve as three examples of collaboration that creates a foundation for expanded connections. Additionally, as a member of the Cal Poly Administration I am deeply concerned with the welfare of students and the relationship between students and residents. Housing is a critical issue for,all and as availability lessens tensions between the community and the University will no doubt increase. I would aspire to assist in addressing situations and concerns that arise from this complex issue. 3. Have you ever attended a meeting of the HRC or another City advisory body? What observations did you make? My wife, Mary Ellen Gibson, is a former chair of the Human Relations Commission, so I am well aware of the duties and scope of work that the HRC performs. The work of the Commission is invaluable, and at times has served as an essential advocacy group for members of the community that lack a direct and clear voice. The work of the HRC in helping the City award grairts-in—aid to the communities' non-profit agencies is critical and invaluable for the agencies that it supports. 4. What qualities, experiences and expertise make you a good candidate for the.HRC? My work with non-profit agencies spans my assignment at Cal Poly to volunteer community involvement. I have served as the President of the Board of Directors for Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, Inc., worked with the board of SLOCO Access and am currently the President of the Board of Directors for the AIDS SUPPORT Network of San Luis Obispo,County, Inc.,the San Luis Obispo Arts Council, and Woods Humane Society. The San Luis Obispo Arts Council is particularly committed to providing arts experience for `at-risk' youth, and the work that we collectively support in the community school system is absolutely critical. Over the past two years I have been a consultant to the ASI Children' Center, assisting in survey development and needs rt b assessment analysis. I believe that I bring a genuine care for the community and, a knowledge of the social and human services challenges that exist for city residents. S. In your view, what are some key human relations issues in SLO? Housing is a key concern for students, service workers and those unable to work due to disability such as citizens with HN and HEP C. Additionally as our population ages, services to seniors are critical. As San Luis remains a white community in the midst of ever changing state demographics, issues of inclusion and acceptance need to be addressed. Most of our social service agencies are just beginning to grapple with the issue of offering service and support resources in Spanish. The need to move forward the accessibility of human services to the Latino population of the City and County should be a priority. Please Axplain why you would like to serve: I have a keen interest in the health and welfare of the citizens of our community. Certainly my professional focus provides me a broad view of the overall community health of our county and city. People in our community each face multiple challenges, and without a cohesive community plan to address the breadth of challenges, it is difficult to know how best to make a lasting difference. As a nearby resident of the homeless shelter, I also have the opportunity in my personal life, on a daily basis, to view the struggles that many of our neighbors face. These homeless neighbors are facing some of the more obvious challenges before our community. Likewise there are many who are challenged by issues less obvious, but no less critical to their wellbeing. Ensuring that all community citizens are heard and respected is vital. Likewise educating our community about the strengths and challenges of our neighbors is also vital to enhancing the quality of life of our community. I believe that the essence of community is indeed demonstrated through the caring of its citizens—neighbors helping one another. San Luis Obispo is made up of many caring individuals, but it is only through working together that we are a true community. 1 have had the opportunity throughout my life to live and work in many communities, several much poorer than San Luis Obispo. I have also witnessed the strength of people when working together, regardless of their circumstance. For all that we have here in San Luis Obispo, there is much that we lack— in knowing and caring for one another. As a community San Luis Obispo possess many great assets, especially through our citizens. Mobilizing the citizens of San Luis Obispo to take a personal responsibility in our community's quality of life is a personal goal of mine. To do this, we must act together—each putting his or her own strengths to work. The Human Relations Commission is but one advisory body working to improve our community's quality of life. I believe the HRC's effectiveness will come in keeping a broad perspective, and in working with other citizen groups on issues of multiple concern. As a community many issues challenge our citizens. It is my hope that through my efforts on behalf of the Human Relations Commission, I can assist our civic leaders in understanding these challenges and their context, and help to identify strategies to address them—as a community. 711 26 ' AC.may Uy J ( c~ .iI .J rJ. 1 h' ` ,ar .+ ;`` rt... j •11! w a.. .Please explain why you would like to serve: I have a keen interest in the health and welfare of the citizens of our community. Certainly my professional focus provides me a broad view of the overall community health of our county and city. People in our community each face multiple challenges, and without a cohesive community plan to address the breadth of challenges, it difficult to know how best to make a lasting difference.
