CITY O F SAN LUIS O B I S P O
FROM: Robert F. Neumann, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: CAL POLY FIRE SERVICES AGREEMENT EXTENSION
CAO RECOMMENDATION
Approve an extension of the existing agreement for fire-related emergency services to Cal Poly
to December 31, 2001.
DISCUSSION
The City has provided fire protection services to Cal Poly since June 1993. The original contract
was for a period of three years; the City and Cal Poly renewed the contract in June 1996 for a
five-year term. An amendment to the contract was approved in January 2001 establishing a pilot
program for the City to provide advanced life support services (paramedic services) to Cal Poly.
Since April of this year, staff has been in negotiations with Cal Poly personnel, who have
expressed desire for another five-year contract. Due to scheduling conflicts and workload
impacts, both parties have not been able to complete negotiations and prepare a new agreement
before the June 30, 2001 expiration date. Cal Poly has requested an extension of the existing
agreement until December 31, 2001, and has also agreed that any compensation increases in the
new contract will be retroactive.
FISCAL IMPACT
None, given that Cal Poly has agreed to make the new contract retroactive to the old expiration
date.
