DISCUSSION Paul Brown was appointed to serve on the Human Relations Commission on August 3,2001 to fill an unexpired term. Mr. Brown was recently called into active duty to serve in the United States Army. On December 18, 2001 the Human Relations Commission Council Subcommittee of Mulholland and Marx reviewed the applications of Human Relations Commission applicants who scored qualified or better during the last round of appointments. They are pleased to nominate Elise Wheeler to complete Mr. Brown's term. Her application is attached. All other applications are available for review in the Office of the City Clerk. ATTACHMENT 1. It is my intention, however,whether or not I am appointed to this body,to attend as many of its meetings as possible. Please explain why you would like to serve: I believe very strongly that diversity is a large part of what makes any city an interesting place to live. A diverse population affords the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of a variety of lifeways which in turn can enhance the perspective one has of his own cultural background and/or lifestyle Choices. Diversity, unfortunately,can also bring with it conflict, disagreement, intolerance, and discrimination all of which seriously detract from the quality of life in the community. For most of my life I have endeavored to reduce the impact of these things in small ways by learning as much as I can from people whose ethnic and cultural backgrounds or lifestyle choices differ from my own. I believe that intolerance and discrimination are grounded in fear and ignorance,and can be alleviated through pro-active programs designed to educate,enhance sensitivity,and embrace and celebrate the diversity in the community. Although I understand that there are no specific requirements for a position on this body, I believe that a number my past experiences would enhance my ability to serve.
