DISCUSSION The 242 acre Johnson Ranch was purchased by the City of San Luis Obispo from the.Johnson family on November 30, 2001. The purchase price of$1,600,000 was supported by $1,255,000 in outside funding support. Late in the process of assembling funding support, one of the City's anticipated State funding sources suddenly became unavailable, which jeopardized the project. After reading about this situation in the newspaper, local businessman Bert Forbes and his wife Candace pledged the shortfall -- $100,000—from their personal funds.. This put the project back on track for timely completion. When Councilmembers learned of this donation, they were very pleased and directed staff to research the naming of an appropriate feature on the Johnson Ranch for the Forbeses. The pond on the property was suggested as a possibility, as it appeared to be an excellent choice: it is a rather prominent and interesting feature of the site, and it had no name. Staff spoke to Johnson family members about the possibility and they were supportive as well. Accordingly, consideration of the naming of the pond was made by the Park and Recreation Commission, and on December 6, 2001, the Commission voted to recommend the name to the Council. The matter is therefore before the Council to formally name the.pond"Forbes Pond." A sign has been made to identify the pond and this sign will be installed at the site in the near future.
