As promised, here is some written material about our current project. As I mentioned to you, we at the Institute for Policy Studies are working with several other organizations, including the Win Without War coalition, to organize a gathering in Washington, DC on Thursday, Feb. 13 of representatives from all the city councils that have passed resolutions opposing a unilateral war with Iraq. We also want to include some mayors. There are now over 50 cities that have passed such resolutions, and the number is growing daily. Check out our website: www.cibesforpeace.org The plan is to have the city councillors and mayors ask for a meeting with President Bush to discuss their concerns about the impact of a war on cities in the US and to personally deliver copies of all the resolutions. If the meeting is granted, great. If not, we would hold a press conference in front of the White House. Then the group will go up to Capitol Hill to meet with members of the House and Senate. We are tentatively planning a luncheon on Capital Hill at which members of Congress can come and meet the representatives from city govts. We may also have some experts—former CIA and military officials, for instance—to talk about altematives to war in Iraq. Then the city officials will go and call on their Senators and congressional offices. For those who fly in Wed. night, we will have a gathering so that folks from the various cities can get to know each other. We will prepare various materials, including econornic analysis of the impact of war on cities.. If possible, we are hoping some of these representatives will be able to go up to New York for the big rally on Feb. 15. We will organize a bus or other forms of transportation to NYC. IN NYC, there will be a meeting with members of the NYC city council which is now considering a similar resolution. We are hoping that the presence of mayors and city councillors from around the country will help to pressure NYC into passing a resolution. We are working with two public relations firms who will do a lot of press work to ensure that this great gathering gets good coverage both in home towns and nationally. We are hoping that in some cases mayors and city councillors can cover their own expenses or can raise funds from local peace groups, churches, etc. But given the state budget crises, we are raising funds to help cover the costs of the delegates. Best, Erik Leaver
