CITY OF SAN LUIS O B PO FROM: Ken Hampian, CAO Lee Price, City Clerk SUBJECT: CANCELLATION OF THE AUGUST 5,2003 REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING I CAO RECOMMENDATION Cancel the Regular City Council Meeting of Tuesday, August 5, 2003. DISCUSSION Since 1994 it has been the practice of the City Council to cancel the first regular meeting in the month of August. This custom allows the Council and staff members to plan summer vacations. Staff recommends that the Council let tradition stand and cancel the August 5, 2003 meeting and; to the extent possible, schedule vacations during this "dark" period. ALTERNATIVE In recent years, vacations have often been scheduled before and after the cancelled meeting, resulting in several weeks of less than a full Council. If canceling the first meeting in August does not assist in reducing summer meeting absences, then Council may wish to discontinue the tradition, since meeting cancellations can result in very heavy agendas both before and after the cancelled meeting. Not canceling any meetings would "smooth out" the workload some, which would be advantageous if a cancelled meeting is not helpful in vacation planning.
