To: Council Colleagues
From: Dave Romero, Mayor
Subject: Zone 9 Advisory Committee—Flood Control and Water Conservation District
The Committee met July 9`h and received an update on the Waterway Management Plan. The public
comment period for the Environment Impact Report has been completed. Responses will be prepared
and a final draft submitted to the Board of Supervisors and City Council in late October or early
November.
Joe McDermott, Streets Maintenance Supervisor, who manages the field crews for creekways
management for the City, reported that CCC crews will be working in the creeks for the next two
weeks, concentrating mainly on San Luis Creek.
The committee received a report on the very successful experiment using goats in San Luis Obispo's
creeks to eliminate excessive shrubbery. The committee's opinion was that it would be worthwhile to
use goats as an on-going part of our creek maintenance program in the future.
The Committee authorized City staff to conduct creek maintenance clearance both upstream and
downstream of the City, using$10,000 that had been budgeted for County services. The City has a
considerable interest in these areas as it relates to flood protection for our community.
There will be a Creek Clean-up Day on September 27`h, sponsored by the Land Conservancy, and in
cooperation with the City of San Luis Obispo. The Board authorized a$1,000 expenditure in addition
to a$1,000 contribution by Roy Parsons to help with advertising of the program.
