This is a Planning effort spearheaded by SLOCOG with the intent of developing tools to help the Cities and County better deal with long term growth. The effort builds on the foundation established beginning in the early 1990's with a number of public workshops called"Designing the Future",Foundation for Community Design, a group forming out of that, and an effort called Action for Healthy Communities. The common thread with all these is the understanding that the local citizens and decision makers can and must shape what our communities become;provided we understand the forces that create change and effectively communicate our desires for the future: Because transportation is a primary focus of SLOCOG, the tools being developed with this effort emphasize the impacts upon the transportation systems of various growth patterns that could develop. At this time the tools are designed to work at the regional level and not to replace traffic studies the City presently use to determine localized impacts such as level-of-service for intersections. At the meeting the discussions ranged from how to keep these efforts moving to the need to include people from both the South and North County in these meetings and the question of what the SLOCOG staff envisioned as an end product. The three elected officials stated that affordable housing, adequate water supplies, and viable transportation systems are, and will likely continue to be critical issues for this County. They also made it very clear that they see land use decisions as remaining with each local jurisdiction. At the end of the meeting, Steve Devencenzi of SLOCOG staff asked that the elected officials help identify stakeholders who will be willing to work with SLOCOG in a series of workshops this fall and winter, with dates and locations to be firmed up this summer. The workshops are intended to help develop a consensus on where we can go with these concepts and how effective tools can be developed to reach the goals identified. _r v_dhQ_eix.l OUNCIL ;--CDD DIR jt C,=.0 FDIP.
