FROM: Deborah Cash, Administrator
SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF NEW SLO DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION BOARD OF
DIRECTORS MEMBERS
CAO RECOMMENDATION
By motion, appoint Doug Shaw and Tom Copeland to the SLO Downtown Association Board of
Directors.
DISCUSSION
In December 2004, Board member Jeff Langford sold his business Downtown and in January
2005, Board member Frank Merson was transferred from Long's Pharmacy in Downtown San
Luis Obispo to a Paso Robles location. These changes rendered them both ineligible for a seat on
the Downtown Association Board of Directors. As permitted by the Association's by-laws, the
vacated seats may be filled by appointment by the President of the Board and approval of the
appointment by the entire Board. Doug Shaw, owner of The Sanctuary Tobacco, was appointed
and approved in January 2005 to complete the remaining term vacated by Jeff Langford, which
expires on March 30; 2005. Tom Copeland, Downtown property owner, was appointed in
January 2005 with expected confirmation of the appointment at the February 8`h Board meeting
of the Downtown Association, to complete the remaining term vacated by Frank Merson, which
expires on March 30, 2006.
Mr. Shaw has owned The Sanctuary Tobacco Shop since 1992. He has served on the Downtown
Association Board of Directors and Promotions Committee, and is currently a member of the
Economic Activities Committee. He has declared his candidacy for an available seat on the
Board of Directors for the 2005-2007 term.
Tom Copeland has spent his entire business career working in Downtown San Luis Obispo.
From the time he starting working in his parents' shoe store, Tom's business interests have been
focused Downtown. He co-founded Copeland's' Sports with his brother Jim, with whom he also
developed, and continues to own, the Downtown Centre and the soon-to-open Court Street
Centre.
