SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF NEW SLO DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION BOARD OF
DIRECTORS MEMBERS
CAO RECOMMENDATION
By motion, reappoint Ellen Henry, Alex Gough, Tunny Ortali, Howard Carroll and Doug Shaw,
and appoint Pam Seeley, to the SLO Downtown Association Board of Directors.
DISCUSSION
The SLO Downtown Association held its annual election in February, 2005 to fill six seats with
Board members whose terms will run from April 1, 2005 — March 31, 2007. Each Downtown
Association member was mailed one ballot and was able to vote for up to six choices from a
roster of six candidates.
Ballots were received and tabulated by the nominating committee; election results will be
submitted to the Downtown Association Board of Directors for approval at its 8 March 2005
meeting. The slate of new officers is then forwarded to the City Council for final approval before
said officers may begin official Board service on 1 April, 2005.
As required by the Association's by-laws, all elected members are owners or managers of
businesses in the Downtown Association district.
The following Board members were elected to serve until March 31, 2007
Ellen Henry Takken's Boots & Shoes (2°d term)
Howard Carroll Carroll Properties (2°d term)
Alex Gough Adobe Realty (2nd term)
Tunny Ortali F. McLintocks Saloon (151 term)
Doug Shaw The Sanctuary Tobacco Shop (1st term)

Doug Shaw,owner of The Sanctuary Tobacco Shop,has been an active
member of the Downtown San Luis Obispo community and shop owner
since 1992. Doug truly feels that Downtown SLO"is the most unique place
in the world," and he is very dedicated to preserving its spirit and charm.

Economic Activities Committee, Parking and Access Committee, Friends of
3 Hearst Castle, and former president of the Rotary Club. If elected, Doug says

er of Takken's Boot& Shoes in Downtown SLO for 10 years.As a current
Board and Promotions Committee member, she very well understands what
O it means to be a part of Downtown and the commitment required to main-
tain and evolve Downtown's unique allure. Ellen's current involvement also
UO includes Chairperson of the Promotions Committee and attends Chamber of
Commerce Boards Meetings as a guest. Ellen's love of and commitment to
Downtown is further demonstrated by her innumerable hours spent volun-
teering at Downtown events.

Howard Carroll is a third generation San Luis Obispo native and has worked

�,�,• Downtown since 1971. In addition to his role with Board of Directors,he
serves on two committees,Parking and Access and Economic Activities.
Howard believes that his historical knowledge of Downtown makes him an
excellent candidate for Board of Directors. In years past; Howard has played
many roles in the San Luis Obispo community: business person, service with
the Chamber of Commerce,property owner, and lifetime resident. His various
experiences,both in business and personal life,will contribute a broad per-
spective to the Board. If re-elected, Howard says he will continue to focus on
expanding Downtown's economic vigor.

Tlunny Ortali,Co-Owner

Tunny Ortali,business owner, and Executive Commitee Member came to
1 San Luis Obispo in the 1960's to pursue a college education at Cal Poly
and never left because he was awe-struck by San Luis Obispo's unique
charm and natural style. Since then, he has become the owner of five res-
taurants in the San Luis Obispo area, including F. McLintocks Saloon on
Higuera Street in Downtown. His past community involvement, including
former Board Membership and Chair of Thursday Night Promotions Com-
mittee, and genuine adoration for Downtown San Luis Obispo are reason
enough,he says,to consider him an excellent choice for Board of Direc-
tors.Tunny's primary focus is to further protect Downtown's charm and
uniquess,and strengthen the vitality of businesses.

Board member Alex Gough, owner of Adobe Realty, says he is eager to
- remain on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Association. "This
r is a critical time for Downtown",he says. His community involvement
!i includes 10 years with the Seismic Safety Committee, County Historic So-
ciety membership and volunteer work, long-term volunteer service for the
Transitions-Mental Health Association, and participation on the Economic
Activities Committee.Alex was raised in Downtown San Luis Obispo,
is married to Anne Sechser Gough and is father to four sons, Max,Mi-
chael, Brendan, and Kenneth. For over 20 years he has been a successful
Downtown businessman and owner of the historic Sauer-Adams Adobe. If
elected,Alex says he will strive to protect the historic fabric of Downtown
and encourage improvements to its infrastructure.
Pam Seeley, Co-Owner

} Since 1974, Pam Seeley has lived and worked both in and near Down-
town. She and husband,Bob Seeley,current Board Member and Executive
Committee Member,own and operate SOHO Studio on Higuera Street.
Pam is an avid supporter of the arts and humanitarian causes, as demon-
strated by past fundraising efforts for the Arts Council, SMARTS,Wom-
en's Shelter, and Enhancement. Pam has always wanted to be more in-
volved in.Downtown, and is eager to meet and work with the people who
help shape Downtown. She is also interested in working with the Parking
and Access Committee to find more suitable parking conditions surround-
ing on-going construction in Downtown.
