Advisory Body Application — Supplemental Questionnaire
Cultural Heritage Committee (CHC)
1. Why do you want to be a member of the CHC?
I have a continuing interest in the history of both the City and the County of San Luis
Obispo, and a desire to see local historical resources used to their best advantage for the
community's residents and visitors.
2. What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to serve as a resource on historical background. Also, please see#5 on following
pace.
3. Have you ever attended a meeting of the CHC or another City advisory body? If so,
what observations did you make?
I attended a 2001 meeting of the Cultural Heritage Committee when the issue under
review was that of preserving or demolishing the City's former Tansportation
Department garages, located just behind the new fire station on Santa Barbara Street I
observed a healthy give-and-take,with public input respectfully listened to,and with
Committee members exercising tact and patience in a difficult situation.

4. What qualities, experience and expertise make you a good candidate for the CHC?
Eighteen years of teaching experience(University of Missouri,Cal Poly,Cuesta College);twelve
years of experience as Administrative Assistant/Office Manager in both the public and private
sectors.
Also,please see#6,following page.
5. In your view, what are some key cultural heritage issues in SLO?
a.) The pressure for development is relentless, and the very qualities which make this city such a
desirable place to live and work, are increasingly at risk. We need-to move into the future
without obliterating the city's historic past.
b.)While the City enjoys numerous visible links to the Chumash,to the early Hispanic settlers,
and to Chinese and Japanese pioneers,I believe we could do more to highlight groups such as the
Azorean Portuguese, the Germans, the Italian Swiss, and the more-recently-arrived Hispanics.
This could be accomplished, in part,by a program of signage for buildings or locations tied to
those groups(i.e.the Creamery complex[related to the county's early dairy farmers, many of
whom were Italian-Swiss];First Bank[once the site of the Swiss-owned Grutli Hotel];the comer
of Broad&Higuera Streets, once the site of the Andre store [a rallying point for the early
Portuguese community];and the Sinsheimer Bros. building,the Sauer-Adams adobe,and the
Sauer Grocery/Pier I building, all of which were German-owned and operated.
Nor would signage have to be limited to"underrepresented"groups. The Andrews Bank
Building's old brass sign is virtually illegible and largely ignored. The Johnson Building at the
Comer of Chorro and Higuera deserves signage re the City's fust mayor,Charles H.Johnson, and
the"Fanny Wrappers"building has a venerable banking history which is not apparent to passers-
by. The Tower Building could use some explaining, there's a wonderful history at the site of
Charles Shoes, and the Hudson's Grill building is of historical interest because of the old Sperry
Flour Co.business once located there.
Existing signage at the Presbyterian Church, behind the old"Cigar Factory,"and at the Dallidet
adobe could be made consistent with other signage, and additional signage could be created for
the Soda Works building on Nipomo Street, and for the Mission Grill building, the site of one of
the city's earliest meat markets, and then of the old French Hotel.
An effort such as this would do much to make the core of the city a sort of"museum without
walls,"one which would be"visited"on a regular basis by residents and.visitors alike.
