June 21,2005 j acEnaa uEpoat IumN (f s_ CITY OF SAN LUI S O B I S P O FROM: Paul LeSage, Parks and Recreation Director SUBJECT: NAMING THE BATTING CAGES AT SINSHEIMER PARK CAO RECOMMENDATION As recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission and Joint Use Committee, approve naming the batting cages in Sinsheimer Park "The Maino Family Batting Cages". DISCUSSION In 2001, the San Luis Obispo Youth Sports Federation donated an eight cage practice batting facility to the City. This was a true community effort with numerous individuals and companies contributing. Most prominent among those who contributed was Maino Construction. In addition to contributing countless hours of company labor on the cages, Tom Maino coordinated the project and solicited in-kind contributions of labor and materials from most, if not all, of the companies you see on the plaque. As a result, the Youth Sports Association was able to contribute a facility worth more than $200,000 to the City at the cost roughly one-third of that value. In honor of their incredible contribution to this project and to the family's long history of support for the youth of our community, the San Luis Obispo Youth Sports Association has proposed naming this facility the Maino Family Batting Cages. CONCURRENCES In 1997, the City Council adopted a park naming policy. The policy authorizes the Parks and Recreation Commission to review naming recommendations and forward appropriate ones to the Council for their approval. The Parks and Recreation Commission on May 25, 2005 and the Joint Use Committee on May 24, 2005 both reviewed and approved the naming. Minutes from those meetings are included as attachments 1 and 2.
