SUBJECT: August 25, 2005 Meeting of the Nacimiento Project Commission
The Nacimiento Project Commission met on August 25, 2005. The Commission received a
report that the design contract had been awarded by the Board of Supervisors to Black and
Veatch Corporation. Currently, the project manager, project engineer, design team,
environmental team,right-of-way agent and the finance team are all on board and the project is
moving forward on all fronts. The schedule is to begin construction in mid-summer of 2007,
with construction to be completed by January of 2010.
The cities of Arroyo Grande and.Grover Beach have expressed an interest in participating in the
project. If they do join the project, there should be some savings to all current participants due to
the distribution of costs over a larger base.
The City of San Luis Obispo, the Whale Rock Commission and the CSA-10 (Cayucos) are
discussing the possibility of exchanging Whale Rock water with Nacimiento water. This would
result.in a more efficient distribution if it is agreed to by all parties.
The staff has submitted an application to the Department of Water Resources for a$26A million
Prop 50 Grant and Congressman Bill Thomas has included a$25 million authorization in the
congressional budget. All of these outside sources of funding would reduce the-participants'
cost.
The$150 million project is proceeding on schedule and within the budget, with a great spirit of
cooperation among the participants.
