Linden, Chief of Police® Prepared By: Daniel R. Blanke,Police Captain SUBJECT: 2006 OFFICE OF TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANT CAO RECOMMENDATION 1. Accept Office of Traffic Safety(OTS) mini-grant award in the amount of$10,388. 2. Authorize the Chief of Police to execute all grant related documents. DISCUSSION The California OTS offers grants to local law enforcement agencies, along with State college and university police departments, for seat belt safety enforcement efforts during the California Click It or Ticket (CIOT) campaign. The CIOT goal for 2006 is to increase seatbelt usage to 93% statewide. The CIOT strategy is to focus public information and enforcement on persons who fail to use seatbelts during the May 2006 Buckle Up America/Operation ABC National Mobilization. The OTS will coordinate the public information element of the campaign for one week prior to and during the May enforcement mobilization period. The mini-grant will reimburse overtime salary and benefit costs for Police Department sergeants, officers, and support staff for seatbelt enforcement activities during a three week mobilization period that includes the Memorial Day holiday (May 15 through June 4, 2006). Staff requests that Council accept the $10,388 OTS mini-grant and authorize the Chief of Police to enter into a contract with the State to execute all grant documents. FISCAL IMPACT Matching funds are not required. There is no negative fiscal impact. ALTERNATIVE Decline to accept the grant award. Staff does not recommend this alternative, as efforts to maintain and improve traffic safety in the community are consistent with Council adopted public safety program objectives.
