The Council of Governments met Wednesday, April 6`h. Areas of special interest to the City of
San Luis Obispo are as follows:
1. The Board received the Executive Director's report which indicated a severe shortage of
funds for highway projects. It appears that City projects, such as the widening of Orcutt
Road and Santa Barbara Street and replacement of buses, will continue to be funded.
However, the mid-Higuera widening project will be delayed. Many other projects County-
wide will be delayed until 2008. This includes the 4-laning of Hwy. 46, east of Paso Robles,
the widening of the Santa Maria Bridge, and operational improvements such as merging
lanes on Hwy. 101 which have been in the design process for several years.
2. The widening of South Street under contract to Sousa Construction will continue as weather
allows and is estimated to be completed by July.
3. The repaving of Rte. 227 with the City, including South Broad Street, South Street, and a
portion of Higuera Street and Madonna Road, is scheduled for next year. It is possible that at
that time, modifications can be included in the South Street area to improve safety.
4. In response to a number of requests, the Board determined to provide a trial Sunday bus
service for three routes, serving all areas of the County. Although there will be no direct cost
to San Luis Obispo during the first year of operation, in the long run, this expanded service
will reduce the amount of funds the City will have available for our own bus service.
5. The budget includes funding for CalTrans to continue the study of operational improvements
for the 101/Hwy. 1 (Santa Rosa Street) intersection in San Luis Obispo. At this point, Cal
Trans will continue to fund this study. However, this study does not encompass a long-range
answer, but merely improves operations.
