LEWELLING subsequently barricaded himself in a motorhome and initiated an 11 hour standoff with SWAT officers. LEWELLING was armed with a shotgun and claimed also to possess an assault rifle. It was necessary for officers to evacuate residents from their homes to ensure their safety during the incident:The residents of two homes, in particular, were extraordinarily helpful to officers in spite of the inconvenience of having to leave their houses. The San Luis Obispo Police Department's Community Appreciation Program Committee nominated the following individuals for recognition at a meeting of the City Council: RENTERIA FAMILY Constatino RENTERIA, Matilde GRACIANO, Esthele RENTERIA,and Angela RENTERIA The RENTERIA family was evacuated and not allowed to return until the completion of the incident. Mr. RENTERIA was unable to go to work because officers could not let him move his car from where it was parked near the suspect's location. The family was extremely helpful and even allowed officers to use their residence which was close enough to the motorhome to allow officers to see it and to communicate directly with LEWELLING while he was barricaded inside. SARAH CORDOVA Sarah CORDOVA's residence is located a few houses away from the motorhome. When Sarah evacuated, she allowed the Crisis Negotiation Team to take over her house to so that they would have a comfortable, convenient location from which to negotiate with LEWELLING. Her cooperation allowed for smooth communications and a safe resolution to the standoff. While these citizens were dramatically inconvenienced by the actions of Jesse LEWELLING, their selfless and community-minded cooperation with the Police Department makes them truly worthy of commendation and recognition by the San Luis Obispo City Council.
