The Board met Wednesday, May 3, 2006. There was a lively discussion on the possibility of
providing two additional transit services as requested during the Unmet Needs Study and
recommended by staff as pilot programs.
The first increase was for evening service which would be provided by a Runabout van on a
county-wide basis, which inherently provides a very expensive and inefficient service. The
second proposed increase in service was for the provision of Sunday service on three routes
(North Coast,North County and South County). The service is proposed as a pilot program and
is expected to attract five riders per hour. This implies an average of one or two riders on the bus
during most of the time.
Other service providers joined SLO this time and asked that these two additions in service be
continued for additional study. The Board was agreeable to SLO's request that the fundamental
practice of funding the regional service ahead of local service be reviewed to see if there is a
more equitable way of funding transit services within the County.
These items were to be returned to the Board at the June SLOCOG meeting.
