DISCUSSION The Student Community Liaison Committee (SCLC) was formed in 1987 to address student- community issues. The SCLC is chaired by the Cal Poly student body president and includes voting representatives from the University, Cal Poly Associated Students, Inc., Cuesta College, County government, Residents for Quality Neighborhoods and the City. SCLC meets monthly during the school year, and once during the summer, and SCLC subcommittees typically meet between formal meetings. Over the last 20 years, SCLC has served as an excellent forum for sharing information, solving problems, and promoting mutual interests. During the 2004-05 school year, under the leadership of then ASI President Blake Bolton, work began on a"Statement of Hopes for the Community." The drafting of the statement was initiated by students to express, in a positive fashion, the highest hopes of student and community leaders regarding our attitudes and responsibilities as residents of the same community. Over many months, the draft statement was reviewed and revised by SCLC members, including 2005-06 ASI President Tylor Middlestate and, eventually, it was formally adopted by SCLC. SCLC President Matt Maki presented the Statement to the City Council on December 5, 2006, and asked for the City's formal endorsement. Therefore, the Council referred the Statement to staff to prepare the matter for action by the City Council. The Council is only being asked to endorse the statement, and not to "approve" it (e.g. by resolution). This is because the Statement reflects the sentiments of SCLC, and therefore it may be revised from time to time. It would be cumbersome to require member agency action each time changes were made. SCLC accomplishes many tangible things. However, it also plays an important and symbolic leadership role in the community, both on and off-campus. This leadership role includes establishing a positive tone — and setting a good example — for student-community relationship building and problem solving. The Statement of Hopes for the Community is an excellent example of leadership and is therefore recommended for endorsement by the City Council.
