SUBJECT: 2007 OFFICE OF TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANT APPLICATION SUBMITTAL
CAO RECOMMENDATION
Approve the submission of a grant application to the Office of Traffic Safety fora Mini-Grant in
the amount of$10,496.76.
DISCUSSION
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) offers grants to local law enforcement agencies for
seat belt safety enforcement efforts during the Click It or Ticket (CIOT) campaign. This
campaign will be conducted throughout California from May 14th - June 3`d 2007.
The CIOT goal for 2007 is to increase seat belt usage to 93.7%statewide. The.CIOT strategy is
to focus public information and enforcement on persons who fail to use seat belts during the
2007 CIOT National Mobilization. OTS will coordinate the public information element of the
campaign for one week prior to and during the 2007 enforcement mobilization period.
The mini-grant will reimburse overtime salary and benefit costs for police department Sergeants,
Officers, and support staff for seat belt enforcement activities during the mobilization time
period.
This grant application was due to OTS by December 30, 2006. Unfortunately, staff was unable
to seek Council approval prior to submitting the grant application. If Council denies this request,
the grant application can be rescinded.
Staff will return to Council for approval of an expenditure plan if the City is selected as a grant
recipient and after a formal grant award is received.
FISCAL IMPACT
Matching funds are not required. There is no negative fiscal impact.
ALTERNATIVE
Request that staff rescind grant application. Staff does not recommend this alternative, as this
funding supports City traffic safety goals.
